Enjoy it

There are multiple things that motivate people. At various times of his career, Gosha was, too, motivated by different things. Sometimes it was all about getting a raise or a promotion, or otherwise obtaining a new corporate status. Sometimes it was about having an impact, bringing value to thousands of people. Very often it was mostly about impressing his coworkers.

While in the short run he could be driven by various things, eventually it became clear to Gosha that in the long run he had to be enjoying the core part of his work.

Getting joy in doing the core component of your work seemed to be the only way to have enough resilience to overcome all the bad things that were bound to happen in real life. Things would break and make customers angry. Large successful software companies would have crisis times, become less successful and fire people or cut bonuses. Unskilled managers would attempt to ruin your day. You had to receive positive energy from the thing that you’re doing most of your time when you’re at work.

When making career choices, Gosha always tried to make sure that he was getting into a position where he could enjoy the core nature of his work most of the time. That was the only way to survive, stay healthy and productive for many years to come, and that was exactly what Gosha intended to do.
